El antiguo Universal Product Code, origen del sistema de código de barras comercial.
Consta de 12 dígitos, 11 más el dígito de control. En la imagen, etiqueta un producto fabricado en India, que en el sistama EAN de 13 dígitos comenzaría por 890.
El código mide 31x11mm. y está truncado.
En el antiguo sistema UPC no existe el llamado prefijo de país; en el de la imagen, los seis primeros dígitos representan a la empresa (672145) sea del país que sea. El resto, al producto.
El sistema se quedó pequeño pronto y dió origen al actual, el sistema EAN (GS1).
